In August 1984 Bert Hunt of the Middlesex and Royal Sussex Regiments proudly shows his photographs to the locals near Mons. During the great German offensive in 1918, his rifle got so hot during the fierce fighting he urinated on it to cool it down. They held out for seven days against the German forces. He even had a bullet go through his steel helmet. Out of 900 men of his battalion only 130 remained. Bert features in my book 'Great War Portraits'. A brave and modest man. ©KeithCollman
